2021.12.06 03:11 KejsarePDX It was not built for baseball -- A brief (ranting) historical review of Providence Park

iT's A bAseBaLl StAdIuM

@TheMikeDonovan We're in for a week of "it was built as a baseball stadium" tweets aren't we? Spoiler alert- it wasn't #RCTID
https://twitter.com/TheMikeDonovan/status/1467335852514693125
Built in 1926 Without Baseball In Mind The then Multnomah Field was too small a venue for many community and sports events that were being hosted there, so designs for building a proper stadium were made. The initial plans included a concrete, two-tiered, U-shaped stadium that could hold 100,000 (1925 concept). Once construction began it was pared down to 35,000 seats and a J-shape due to funding. No mention of, or intention for, baseball.
The first event held there was University of Oregon vs. University of Washington football on October 9, 1926. Clearly not baseball.
Since then the stadium has seen many different sports. Even a few alterations to the stadium for it's different uses. First was the dog racing track. The conversion was made for the popular sport in 1933. Still no baseball.
In 1956 baseball finally arrived, but it only moved in after new owners wanted to move out of Vaughn Street Park, a real baseball stadium. The dog racing track was removed and an outfield wall was built. In 1966, the city of Portland bought the stadium for $2.1 million and later installed the first outdoor turf field in professional baseball. There is a baseball tenant, but little was done to make it a baseball stadium. Proper dugouts weren't even installed until the roof was placed in 1982. From 1975, the same year the NASL Portland Timbers started playing there.
The only time I will grant that it was probably aligned to be a baseball stadium was after the renovations in 2001, or 45 years after baseball first became a tenant there. Improved dugouts, outfield stands, hand operated scoreboard, suites behind home plate, etc. However, this change only lasted until 2009 when renovations began for the MLS-bound Portland Timbers and the Portland Beavers left Portland for the third time. The whole time there were other events and sports, namely football, soccer, Rose Festival events, band competitions, concerts, and more. It was a multi-use stadium. I even had a few soccer practices there on the hard turf in the late 90s.
Lastly, just take a look at the stadium itself, the entire west side and what was the first base foul line is parallel to it. No proper baseball stadium does this. The farthest seats away from the home plate on that side face 45+ degrees away from home plate. Most baseball stadiums don't have a south-southeast alignment. Also, it was way too big for minor league baseball. That is why a baseball team eventually failed there five times (Beavers x3, Rockies, Mavericks). Not a baseball stadium.

2021.12.06 03:11 Masters214 I wish I could stop caring about people that I've become attached to. Even when they affect my health negatively.

I saw one of Dr K's videos where someone titled their post "I want to stop caring". Which made me think about how I relate to that statement. But my problem is different than their post to an extent. (some similarities though).
When I meet someone, and start getting close to them (mainly online because I have social anxiety IRL and haven't gotten to know a new person IRL in years), I an unable to stop caring about them regardless of what happens after. A lot of the time, what ends up happening is I find out far down the line that the person exhibits toxic behavior, (or some negative feelings towards me because my personality is different than a lot of people but that's a different story). But if they start acting toxic towards me. I can't find myself being able to cut them off. I've become too emotionally invested in them and it sticks with me.
With one in particular I've tried to cut them off, but I've found myself crawling back to them because I can't stop worrying about them. So far this has happened about 9-10 times at this point. This person does care about me, but have exhibited narcissistic and toxic behavior at times but that's another thing that would be too much to put here.
Other times, friends have blocked or left me and every time it happens, the pain lasts for weeks or even months and I feel like it never truly heals, as if I was traumatized or something. Even if they were completely valid reasons. I feel like the reason could be that I'm just too emotionally sensitive. Or maybe I'm just a narcissist without realizing it, which I try to not be.
I notice people I am friends with say that they could cut off anyone in a heartbeat and it never bother them. I have wished for so long that I could do that. But I can't. I've never blocked anyone before, not even when cutting someone off.
And the thing is I feel so alone in this because I have never met anyone who feels the same way. There have been many times where I thought I have but I haven't. Everyone else just finds it really easy to kill off all feelings for relationships that were years in the making.
I've thought that I could be an empath, but at the same time I heard that people claiming to be empaths are actually narcissists so I try to avoid it. As well as me not relating to some stuff that are associated with empaths.
I think I might be a people pleaser. Since I am constantly putting my focus on the people I care about rather than myself, even at the expense of my own mental health. But at the same time I don't know for sure since I do a bad job at being a people pleaser. I end up making a lot of people irritated and angry at me when I become comfortable when talking with them and show my real self, opinions, etc. (This has also lead to paranoia when building relationships with people but at the same time I rush into them too quickly because I'm really lonely).
I do exhibit narcissistic behavior at times, but that's probably because my mother is a narcissist and her behavior is always rubbing off on me. But I've been trying for years to not become one. (my progress on that mission is questionable)
You can also guess that I have trouble letting things of the past go and that was taught from my narcissistic parent. I don't know if I have a type of attachment condition or anything because I've never seen anyone about this before. (My narc parent doesn't believe in mental health so I'm not allowed). I just don't know what to do and at the same time I blame myself for having this problem.
Also I'm sorry if I said too much with this post. I say a lot of TMI stuff and I'm too open with people because I'm too trusting. Leaving me vulnerable to narcissistic people.
This post is so complicated that I don't know if it even makes sense at this point. I'm probably overthinking....I also have a problem with being trying to be as self-aware as I can but I still screw up and miss so many things.

2021.12.06 03:10 You-han I think IS implemented PvP in one of the best ways possible, at a first impression.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm extremely excited for the future of FEH with how they've implemented PvP.
For the casual crowd, losing has no major punishment aside from time spent. Even if it takes a few extra attempts here and there, it's not impractical to get all the rewards within the 2 week season. No matter how cancer the team you face can be, you can just quickly surrender and move onto the next if you don't want to deal with it with no real punishment.
On the 'competitive' side of things, the fact that IS has given us several customization options on top of private matchmaking opens up an entire new world for us. We as a community can create a standard ruleset (smogon-esque?) to make the mode as enjoyable as possible, or of course this can just be done in between friends or smaller discord groups and such. If things go smoothly, actual tournaments even seem plausible. I believe Ghast is already looking to host one in a couple of weeks!
This is all just at a first glance though, so who knows if things can go downhill from here, but I'm pleasantly surprised at how this was managed and look forward to what we can come up with to make the most of it.

2021.12.06 03:10 kuroma0712 [Activity] Make a Friend Monday (Third time)

For me it is Monday Morning and I thought to myself: I don't know that many of you. And probably there are still people for you who you don't know yet.
So how about we find new friends or conversation partners?
People with the same interests.
What do you have to do for it? - Leave a comment and maybe just name three of your hobbies. And then you look at the other comments for someone who might have similar ones and with whom (as far as you know) you haven't really written or interacted with. Or maybe someone has a hobby that you're interested in.
Maybe this would be something you can do once a week and you will always get to know new people.
I'll start right away with my comment.

2021.12.06 03:10 miss-macaron This show has an excellent balance of unexpected tragedy AND unexpected comedy

I finished binging Season 1 today, and one thing that really stuck out to me was Link Click's excellent manipulation and flow of narrative tone. For a series that focuses on "candid snapshots" into various elements of human life, it's naturally inclined to portray a wide scope of human conditions - both wholesome and tragic, both comedic and dark. However, the way that this show manages to integrate and transition between these contrasting atmospheres is something that really impressed me.
It's not easy introducing humour into a tense scene without coming across as cheesy, forced, or too sitcom-y. Previous series that handled similar concepts either focused their efforts on establishing a consistent, homogenous atmosphere (e.g. Death Parade focused on the darker, more tragic elements of its characters' stories), or tend to exhibit abrupt transitions between constrasting atmospheres (e.g. Angel Beats was kinda like a roulette between comedy, tragedy, and action scenes).
But Link Click doesn't succumb to either of these narrative limitations. It can proficiently weave a serious and sincere tone, but even when it introduces a lighthearted event, it rarely ever feels out of place. The unexpected comedy is so well-integrated, I dare say that it's as impactful as some of the more tragic reveals. And the reason why it works so well, I believe, is because the comedic act is portrayed as a genuine human reaction.
Exhibit A: After a very tense scene of Cheng Xiaoshi (as Dou Dou) trying to extract the ID from the kidnapper's purse, it's a very understandable response for him to reflexively defend himself after getting jump-scared. So, even though the unexpected sight of a 5-year-old uppercutting a middle-aged woman is downright hilarious, it doesn't feel too disjointed from the preceding thriller narrative. It's a very well-integrated piece of humour that remains consistent with the preceding high-tension atmosphere.
Exhibit B: When Cheng Xiaoshi (as Xu Shanshan) tries to throw off the suspect in the alleyway, it's another highly suspenseful moment. His frantic efforts establish a sense of desperation, but just as he's about to change course and make a different move, he gets interrupted by a sudden bout of actual vomit. This change of atmosphere perfectly coincides with the progression of the onlooker's natural reactions - from adrenaline-fueled trepidation, to surprise, to reflexive disgust - such that something as absurdly amusing as the suspect chloroforming himself upon spelling the vomit doesn't come across as too contrived.
All that to say, while the unexpected dark twists are indeed a praiseworthy element of this show, I'd like to see a bit more appreciation for the buildup to the unexpected comedy bits as well. It's very difficult to integrate both tragedy and comedy into the same show, yet Link Click has managed to convey both to the maximum emotional impact.
Thank you for reading!
